All brickwork and stonework would need repointing at some time in its life. Various signs start to show when the old pointing starts to deteriorate, even the pointing falling out, causing damp inside the property.
We have found over the years that people have not removed the old pointing and just re-pointed over the top, leaving the pointing to just wear away in a short time.

The first thing when pointing or repointing any brickwork or stonework is PREPARATION and making sure that all the old pointing is removed correctly. The average depth is between 12mm to 25mm but this depends on how narrow the joint is between the brick and stonework. The narrow joint means less depth can be achieved when pointing or repointing.
The Different Pointing and Repointing Methods
There are different methods when removing the old pointing. Mechanical disk, raking tools and even chisels, making sure that none of the brick/stone is damaged in the process.
There are various types of pointing and repointing which can be used, weather struck, flash and bucket handle are just a few. There are also different types of sand/cement and coloured mortars and they can all make a difference to the end result.
